Tier I, II & III have been used for years in many sports to
describe different levels of play in a defined jurisdiction, this terminology
works well but starts to break down when different areas come to be compared
at a tournament. AAA, AA & A, classifications are not meant to replace
"Tiers" where they exist and make sense.
AAA is the top level of play anywhere, a AAA team enters Tournaments
without worrying about being outclassed by "stacked" teams or superior
competition - they are supposed to BE the superior competition.
AA teams are the next level of competition, they are probably
the second team of a large urban Club or the first team from a medium
sized centre.
A teams are the next step and are likely the "Travel or Rep"
team from a small centre.
EXCEPTIONS do exist, a couple of which are the ODMHA (Ottawa,
Ontario area) and the Province of Quebec. In both cases the top level
of competition is designated AA locally but AAA when they compete outside
of their own area. We attempt to translate their classifications to everyone
else's when listing their events but we suggest you ask questions when
dealing with their contact people.
